NOTICE: The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) is hiring one (1) GEOLOGIC DATA TECHNICIAN to perform geologic map digitization and data entry. The successful candidate will work closely with the GIS (geospatial information system) Coordinator and staff geologists to convert legacy 1:24,000-scale paper geologic maps of the South Pass granite-greenstone belt into modern, Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) Level-3 compliant digital databases. Interested applicants must submit a cover letter and resume. Applications received before August 5, 2026 will receive full consideration. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The GEOLOGIC DATA TECHNICIAN position is a temporary, part-time, contract employment opportunity in Laramie, Wyoming. The contract will be for up to 500 total hours, and hours can be flexible to accommodate a student schedule. This position will work with the GIS Coordinator and staff geologists to modernize paper-only legacy maps containing foundational data on Archean basement rocks, gold-bearing shear zones, and pegmatites, making them fully queryable and georeferenced for modern GIS overlay and exploration modeling.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with the GIS Coordinator and staff geologists to:

  • Assess scan quality and georeference high-resolution map plates (GeoTIFFs)

  • Utilize ArcGIS Pro to georeference and digitize contacts, faults, and structural orientation data

  • Populate non-spatial GeMS database tables (including DescriptionOfMapUnits, DataSources, and Glossary) from original texts

  • Assist with metadata creation and preparation of packages for compliance with USGS GeMS schema

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Experience using GIS software, specifically ArcGIS Pro, and managing spatial datasets

  • Attention to detail with competence in digitization and tabular data entry

  • Ability to read, interpret, and transpose structural features, symbols, and descriptions from geologic maps

  • Familiarity with the USGS Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standard

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The individual hired for this position must be available to work in Laramie, Wyoming, throughout the entirety of the contract.

PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent graduates with a degree in Geology, Earth Science, GIS, Geography, or a closely related field.

Please email a cover letter and resume to tammy.mack@wyo.gov with the subject line “Geologic Data Technician Application.” In the cover letter, please elaborate on your experience with GIS and geologic maps.

APPLICATIONS: The State of Wyoming is an Equal Opportunity Employer and actively supports the ADA and reasonably accommodates qualified applicants with disabilities. No notice of eligibility will be sent to applicants who meet the minimum qualifications.
